Salem residents and business owners understand that limited expansions of fiber networks mean reduced access to high-speed, reliable internet. This unfair reality can limit — and sometimes eliminate — opportunities for community members.
This is why we formed Fair Internet Oregon, a growing statewide coalition focused on one thing: leveling the playing field so every Oregonian has access to fast, reliable internet — like high-speed fiber — at a fair price.
The Problem:
In cities like Salem, outdated policies impose a 7% tax on some internet providers — while others are fully exempt. These inconsistent and discriminatory fees make it harder for new providers to compete, limit consumer choice, slow innovation, and drive up costs for households and businesses.
What's at Stake:
Fair Internet Oregon is calling on city leaders across the state to eliminate discriminatory taxes — starting with the repeal of Salem’s 7% tax on new providers. We believe in fair rules that apply equally to all companies and support competition, innovation, and access for everyone.
Together, we can modernize Oregon’s internet policies and create a future where every community can connect, compete, and thrive.
